New York [US], July 19: A 61-year-old man in New York state (USA) died after being sucked into an MRI machine (short for magnetic resonance imaging device), according to NBC News citing information from the state's Nasau County Police on July 18.
Nasau County police said the man was wearing a large metal chain and entered the MRI room without permission on the afternoon of July 16 (local time). The MRI machine was running at the time of his entry.
The large metal chain caused the victim to be "sucked into the machine", according to police, adding that the incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on July 16.
After being treated at the hospital, the man died from severe injuries at 2:36 p.m. on July 17, nearly 24 hours later.
MRI safety regulations require that no metal objects be brought into the machine room. Patients are usually required to change clothes before entering and must declare any implants or metal objects in their body.
"It is extremely important to thoroughly screen people and objects before entering the MRI area to ensure that nothing enters the magnetic field and could become a dangerous projectile," according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The MRI office where the incident occurred was Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, a community of about 15,000 people in Nassau County on Long Island, New York.
