New York [US], September 23: Formula One races are set to be shorter in 2027 as the Formula One Commission approved a plan to cut race distances across the board from 305 kilometres to 290km. "In line with the refinements to the Power Unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved," motorsports ruling body FIA said in a statement on Monday evening.
Depending on the track, this means two or three fewer laps in each race. Only the Monaco Grand Prix will likely remain with 78 laps and 260km. The move was triggered by the increase in fuel consumption following new engine regulations that came into force this season.
The plan already had the backing of the teams, who, according to media reports earlier this month, voted against larger fuel tanks and chassis modifications.
The Commission also decided that, regarding races that are disrupted by rain or other factors, it was decided that a hard stop time would be introduced for the end of any racing activity, but that the current limitation of a race to three hours would be removed. The limit of two hours of actual racing will remain. (DPA)
