Washington [US], September 26: The US Department of Justice has just announced that it has criminally prosecuted former FBI Director James Comey on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.
In a new announcement about the decision to prosecute the former FBI Director , the Department of Justice affirmed that Mr. James Comey committed serious crimes, AFP reported on September 26.
If convicted, Mr. Comey faces up to five years in prison. Mr. Comey served as FBI Director from 2013 to 2017.
The criminal charges against the former FBI Director were announced just days after President Donald Trump called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute Mr. Comey and several others.
"No one is above the law," Secretary Bondi wrote on X shortly after the media reported the incident, but did not mention Mr. Comey by name.
"Today's indictment reflects the Justice Department's commitment to holding accountable those who abuse their power to deceive the American people," said Ms. Bondi.
The indictment comes from Lindsey Halligan, who was recently appointed by President Trump as a federal prosecutor. Halligan was Trump's personal lawyer and had no previous experience as a prosecutor.
In 2017, President Trump fired Mr. Comey amid an investigation to determine whether any members of Mr. Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Since Mr. Trump returned to the White House in January, the Justice Department has begun reexamining Mr. Comey's 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. At that hearing, Mr. Comey denied that he authorized the disclosure of information from the investigation to the media.
