Washington (US), March 26: US President Joe Biden during a virtual summit with his counterparts in the European Union discussed White House concerns about Turkey's close ties with Russia, Bloomberg reported, citing several EU officials familiar with the matter.
The Thursday report said that Biden is concerned that any democracy in Turkey is backsliding while Ankara strengthens its bilateral relations with Russia.
EU leaders threatened sanctions against Ankara, but vowed to strengthen economic ties with Turkey if the nation de-escalates tensions in the dispute over gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, the report said.
Earlier on Thursday, European Council President Charles Michel said that EU leaders had briefly discussed relations with Russia during Thursday's video conference.
