Cairo [Egypt], May 5: Local authorities said on Thursday that a passenger bus and a lorry have collided in Egypt's southwestern province of New Valley, leaving at least 14 people dead. Twenty-five others were injured in the accident late Wednesday on a highway linking the province to the southern city of Assiut. New Valley Governor Mohammed al-Zamlout said in a statement published online. Egypt's state-owned newspaper al-Ahram put the death toll at 17. The cause of the collision was initially unclear.
According to media reports, the bus had crashed into the truck that was parked at the side of the road. Fatal road crashes are relatively common in Egypt. They are often blamed for reckless driving and poor road conditions. In recent years, Egypt has built a network of new routes to improve the quality of the roads.(DPA)
